Day 7

Today we were visiting Katemwa A Primary School and Rutunguru Primary School. We actually set off quite early. Shabani picked us up at 8.45am and then we collected Robert and headed out to Katoro to collect Hamisi. It was then about another hours drive to the Chato District Government Offices where we met up with the Deputy District Education Officer and the Ward Education Officer and also the Chair of the District Teachers Union ( who was also a friend of Robert’s). They would all accompany us on our school visits today. Here are a few photos from the journey.

Here bicycles are the most popular mode of transport.

The cattle in this area have huge horns.

Monkeys on the road.

Cattle completely blocking the road.

And a sign that Pete loved!! ( I don’t think a Masaii warrior had set up business here).

So it was then about another 30 minute drive to Katemwa A Primary School. We have supported this school for the last 2 years and at present they have 6 desktop computers and a printer. They have always been really good at using the computers and communicating with us and so today we were adding a projector, which they had requested and also a laptop to use with it. The school now has over 3000 pupils and 30 teachers so the laptop and projector will really help when teaching these large classes.

When we arrived Emmanual, the ICT teacher and the Head Teacher greeted us and took us to the Head Teacher’s office where we then went through the paperwork for the loans. Emmanual then took us to the computer room where he had organised a whole event for us. In the room were a large number of teachers, parents, members of the local education ward as well as some students all sat at the computers. Look at the drawing on the blackboard.

The event started with lots of introductions and everyone thanking us for coming to visit and for supporting the school. Emmanual then gave a lovely speech outlining all they had achieved with the computers and what the students and teachers had learnt.

This was then followed by the students showing us their computer skills. Each pair of pupils took it in turn to demonstrate a different skill including, using Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, PaintBox, searching the Internet and playing games. They were also able to confidently explain what they were doing to everyone watching.

After the demonstration we were served some refreshments of sodas and nuts. We then handed over the projector and laptop. I could see on Emmanual’s face how pleased he and the other teachers were to have these.

We were then thanked again by one of the students and after that we moved outside to take some photos with the students.

By the time we left it was about half two and we were running rather late so we headed straight to Ritunguru School. We have supported this school over the last couple of years with 2 laptops but they have now recently got electricity so today we had brought them 3 desktops and a printer.

The guys from Chato district council and the teacher’s union also accompanied us on this school visit. When we arrived we were met by Peter the ICT teacher and some other members of staff. Later we were also joined by some parents.

We did the paperwork and then had a small hand over ceremony with the teachers and parents. Again there were lots of speeches and people thanking us for the support we give to the school. Again we were provided with refreshments of sodas and nuts.

By now it was about 4pm and we were all quite hungry so we left the school and headed to a local restaurant for some food. Luckily they had a hot buffet of rice, fish, beans, greens and sauce which was all very nice so we were able to get food straight away.

After we had finished eating we drove on to Katoro where we stopped briefly at Hamisi’s office and then on to Geita. Shabani dropped us back at the hotel about 7ish and we then spent the evening in the bar where Robert and Shabani joined us later.
